Healthy Discipline Strategies You Can Do at Home

Discipline is a necessary part of child development. It teaches your kids how to make good decisions and helps them become responsible adults. Discipline isn’t just about punishment; it is also about teaching your kids how to behave in ways that will help them navigate life.

As a certified Montessori School in Houston, Texas, we have listed some healthy discipline strategies you can use at home to teach your kids what they need to learn:

  • Set limits.

Setting a limit teaches them that life has boundaries and helps them develop self-control. Remember to use a calm voice when giving instructions or asking questions about something they’ve done.

  • Encourage independence.

If your child has a problem with something—like a toy they can’t put back together—it’s better to let them figure it out independently. When you step in, be careful not to give them the answer immediately. Instead, help them solve the problem by asking questions and providing guidance.

  • Be consistent and firm.

Be consistent in setting and enforcing rules, and don’t be afraid to use gentle physical cues when needed (like putting a hand on a child’s back to keep them from running into the street).

When it comes to discipline, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. That’s why here at Montessori Learning Institute, a certified learning institute in Texas, we provide positive disciplining while instilling values such as respect and empathy. We strive to create an atmosphere where every child feels safe and confident to learn.

In our academic school, we believe that kids learn when they’re empowered. That’s why we teach our students to take responsibility for their actions from an early age.
